Kathleen M. Premo, Member of the Firm in the Health Care & Life Sciences practice, in the firm’s St. Petersburg office, was quoted in Law360 Pulse, in “Outside GC Practices Are a Potential Mid-Law Opportunity,” by Emma Cueto. (Read the full version – subscription required.)

Following is an excerpt:

As more Mid-Law firms create dedicated practice areas for their outside general counsel services, those in the industry see the area as a potential sweet spot for mid-size and regional firms. …

Kathleen Premo, who spent more than a decade in-house and now heads up the general counsel services practice at Epstein Becker Green PC, said that the firm has had a lot of success with the practice area since opening it several years ago. A big part of that, she said, is the fact that the firm has many attorneys like her who have previously worked in-house and understand what companies need from an outside general counsel.

"Not only do we have the ability to provide the services, we've cultivated the expertise of having that experience being in house, having that level of having been in the trenches with your clients that develops when [you're in-house]," she said.

That in-house experience, backed by the wider firm's resources and expertise, is "absolutely appreciated" by clients, she said. It's also something that she sees as a good fit for a firm like Epstein Becker.

Often, she said, former general counsel or life-long in-house attorneys will try to hang a shingle and offer similar services on their own, but then run into the issue of not having the range of expertise to meet the needs of unfamiliar companies. A Mid-Law firm, on the other hand, is better positioned to provide advice to a range of clients.
