Sharon Peters and Kate Rigby, Members of the Firm, will speak at Hot Topics in the Health Care/Life Sciences Workplace, a CLE program co-sponsored by the Health Law Section and Labor & Employment Law Section of the Boston Bar Association.

Two significant challenges for health care / life sciences employers and workforce alike are navigating mental health accommodations requests and preventing and addressing violence and safety in the workplace. These challenges existed before the pandemic but have been exacerbated in recent years amid increasing reports of employee stress and burnout and, for frontline health care workers, concerns about physical and verbal threats faced on the job.

The first panel will provide in-house and outside counsel perspectives on the particular difficulties and risks employers and employees, including managers, face in working through accommodations requests for mental health conditions including anxiety, depression, ADHD/ADD and PTSD.

The second panel will discuss current data-backed trends in safety in the workplace, with a focus on violence prevention in hospitals and health care clinic settings and the unique factors affecting such settings. Panelists will review federal and state law and regulatory requirements and enforcement patterns for employers with regard to violence planning and prevention.
