Following is an excerpt:
The Labor Department created a new office with the mission of helping employers comply with labor law, a DOL spokeswoman confirmed to Bloomberg Law.
The Office of Compliance Initiatives will work with other enforcement agencies to improve regulatory compliance and enforcement, and it will provide liaisons with employers to explain or assist in the process. The office will be under the scope of the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Policy. Its funds will come from the DOL’s existing budget. …
Prior administrations have taken different approaches to compliance assistance, Paul DeCamp, who ran the WHD under President George W. Bush, told Bloomberg Law. Creating a dedicated office with compliance as its central mission shows this is a clear priority for the current DOL, he said.
“This reflects a philosophy that providing information to an employer will increase compliance and providing workers with information also increases compliance,” he said.
But he noted that there could be complaints. Some DOL watchers may feel this signifies that the DOL intends to focus less on enforcement, he said, adding that It’s important for the agency to be mindful of those concerns.
“Time will tell how this plays out,” he said.
